Grenades and broken toilet seats put in household dustbins have resulted in whole loads of recyclable waste being rejected. They were examples of items South Cambridgeshire District Council recently found in the wrong bins, and others include disco lights, a bowling ball and “lots of cuddly toys”.

The council said people should regard recyclables as “assets”, because when correctly binned, they could bring in revenue for the authority. Gas cylinders and car brake discs have also been found at the recycling waste management site at Waterbeach. A council spokesman said when incorrect items are spotted in household bins at the time of collection, they are left, and the owner is informed why.

2019 has seen a wave of environmental activism take centre stage in the public eye. With this in mind, the 2019 Recycle Week is taking inspiration from this year’s surge in campaigning, focusing the week of events around the theme: ‘Recycling.

It’s in our own hands.’ The week will run from 23-29 September, and is organised by Recycle Now, which is managed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). New research from Recycle Now presented in its annual Recycling Tracker survey has revealed that 60 per cent of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago, with nearly a third of these people citing environmental concerns as the main driver for recycling more. Throughout next week, Recycle Now will be joined by some of the UK’s leading brands and organisations, including Coca Cola, Unilever, Danone and Highland Spring Group, in actively encouraging the public to further improve their recycling.

Recycling plastics is a daily guessing game for most householders. Cardboard, paper, metal and glass can all be tossed straight into the recycling bin if they are clean and free from grease and stains. But plastic is complicated. There is no end of fallacies and misconceptions about which pieces of plastic packaging go in the recycling bin and which are general waste.

Don’t rely on the myths about plastic recycling – get your facts straight and you too can recycle. Almost half of all the plastic produced each year is used for product packaging. From shampoo bottles to tubs of yogurt, Europeans each produce an average of 31kg of plastic waste a year. But what should we do with it? Throw it in the recycling bin? Chuck it in the waste? Or take it to a recycling centre? To clear up the confusion, here is a guide to the myths and realities of plastic recycling.

Between April 2017 and March 2018, 182,965 tonnes of rubbish was recycled or composted in Cambridgeshire, according to Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs figures, placing the county near the top of the table for recycling in the UK.

Last year households in Huntingdonshire recycled 19,000 tonnes of food and garden waste, this included tea bags and even coffee grounds, according to Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC). Earlier this year, Huntingdonshire was named the first “circularly economy” for plastic, leading the way for recycling in the nation. Alongside recycling food waste, and litter, residents are also encouraged to reuse and recycle unused clothes. Textiles placed in recycling bins cost councils across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough on average £10,000 a month, with councils now encouraging residents to donate their clothes to charity shops. Alongside Recycling Week, people are also being encouraged to take part in World Clean Up Day, which encourages residents to go outside and pick up litter.
